In Loving Memory of Vera Alice Livingston Powell

1931 - 2026

“

Alice’s life was a beautiful reminder that the greatest treasures are often found in the simplest things: a flower blooming in the garden, a familiar face smiling across the counter...

Vera ‘Alice’ Livingston Powell, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, and cherished soul, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2026, at the age of 94. Born in Towns, Georgia, Alice lived a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, hard work, friendship, and countless memories that will forever be treasured by those blessed enough to know her.

Alice was the wife of the late Martin Eugene “Gene” Powell and the daughter of N.A. Livingston and Bettie Johnson Livingston. She was also the stepdaughter of Mary Alice Vaughn Livingston. One of nine children, Alice grew up surrounded by family, and the love of family remained at the heart of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, N.A. Livingston, Bettie Ann Johnson Livingston, and Mary Alice Vaughn Livingston; her siblings, McKinley Livingston, Olin Livingston, Elbert Livingston, L.D. Livingston, Ethel Livingston Hulett, May Livingston, Beaulah Livingston Walker, Dolly Livingston Walker; and her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Gail Powell. She was also preceded in death by her husband's parents, R.Q. and Naomi Powell.

For many years, Alice devoted herself to being a homemaker, lovingly caring for her family and creating a home filled with warmth, good food, plenty of sweet tea, laughter, and love. Throughout her working years, she worked at Roydon Wear, owned and operated Powell's Paint and Supply, and later served as head cashier at Winn Dixie for nearly 20 years. Her beautiful, winning smile was a familiar and welcome sight, whether she was greeting customers at the register or taking care of business in the office. She had a special way of making people feel welcome, and her kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who crossed her path.

Alice spent most of her adult life in McRae, Georgia, where she built a lifetime of friendships and memories. Nearly nine years ago, she moved to the North Georgia mountains to live with her daughter and son-in-law, where she continued to share her love, laughter, and sweet spirit with those around her.

There was so much that made Alice unforgettable. She was known for her beauty, her radiant smile, her incredible talent as a seamstress, and her award-winning flowers. Her day lilies were especially magnificent, blooming by the hundreds each year and turning her garden into a breathtaking display of color. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life: sitting on the front porch, fishing, dancing, tending to her flowers, listening to the “real” country music, and spending time with the people she loved.
And then there was her cooking! Alice was a wonderful cook, famous for her coconut cakes and tea cake cookies—so delicious that many would say they were the best in the universe. Her kitchen was a place of comfort and connection, where recipes were made with love and memories were created around the table. Her talents, whether with a needle and thread, a mixing bowl, or a flower bed, reflected the care and beauty she brought to everything she touched.

Alice had a tender heart for all living creatures, especially her adored cats. Her beloved cat, Little Bit, held a special place in her heart, as did her grand-dog, Blossom. Animals were never just animals to Alice; they were family, deserving of the same love and kindness she so freely gave to others.

Of course, no story of Alice would be complete without mentioning her best friends and partners in mischief. If she wasn't in the kitchen, tending her garden, sitting on the front porch, or working at Winn Dixie, there was a good chance she could be found with at least one of her dear friends, enjoying a visit, sharing a laugh, or finding a little adventure. Ida Wilkes, Guynell Kennedy, Pearl Sapp, Cora Ellen Gresham, Rita Edge, and Maggie Smith were just some of her treasured companions who shared in the laughter, friendship, and unforgettable moments that made life so special. Their friendships were a testament to Alice’s warm heart and the joy she brought into the lives of others.

Though Alice will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, kindness, beauty, and laughter will live on through the family she cherished and the many lives she touched.

She leaves behind her loving children and their spouses, Sherry Powell Walden (CG Sonny) of Ranger, Georgia, and Craig Powell (Mary) of Ellijay, Georgia; her treasured grandchildren, Shawn Powell (Dawn), Rebecca Walden (Jim), Brandy Powell (Richard), Kim Powell (Rose), Richard Tondreau, and Tyler Powell (Meghan); and her precious great-grandchildren, Phillip Powell (Kelli), Sydney Powell, Easton Powell, Emily Powell, and Samantha Powell, as well as her great great grandchildren,Taylor Rogers, Zane Rogers, and Berkley Little She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, dear friends, her beloved Little Bit, and her grand-dog, Blossom.

Alice’s life was a beautiful reminder that the greatest treasures are often found in the simplest things: a flower blooming in the garden, a familiar face smiling across the counter, a quiet afternoon on the porch, a fishing trip, a shared dance, a kitchen filled with the smell of something sweet, or a friend stopping by just to visit. These ordinary moments became extraordinary because Alice was part of them.

At 94 years old, Alice leaves behind a lifetime of stories, a garden of memories, and a legacy that will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who loved her. Though her hands will no longer tend her flowers, bake her famous cakes, or stitch beautiful creations, the love she poured into this world will never fade. Her smile will be remembered, her laughter will be missed, and her love will remain forever.
She was deeply loved, she will be dearly missed, and she willnever be forgotten. May she rest peacefully, reunited with those who went before her, surrounded by the eternal love she so richly deserves.

Family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate Alice’s remarkable life at a graveside service that will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae-Helena on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Kim Conley officiating.

The family will visit with friends at Lowes Funeral Home in McRae-Helena on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at 11:00 A.M.

Those who wish to honor Alice's memory may do so by planting a day lily, baking something sweet for someone they love, spending a little extra time on the porch with a friend, or showing kindness to an animal in need—simple acts that reflect the beautiful life she lived.
