Monteal Sellars Mathis, age 90, of McRae, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of the McRae community, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at Community Hospice in Vidalia, Georgia. Born on December 22, 1934, in McRae, Georgia, Monteal's life was a testament to her unwavering love for her family and her dedication to serving others.

Funeral Services will be held at Central Grove Church of God on Saturday, August 16 at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Myron Parkerson and Rev. Ralph Horne officiating. Interment will follow at Central Grove Church of God Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Dee Poole, Benjamin Spires, Jonathon Piper, Jamie Mathis, Christian Horne, Hunter Horne and Stacey Mathis. The family will receive friends at Lowes Funeral Home on Friday, August 15 from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M.

Monteal's life was one of service, as evidenced by her long-standing employment with the Telfair County Board of Education, where she worked in the cafeteria at Telfair County High School, nourishing the bodies and spirits of countless students over the years.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie Spires (Jackson), Pat Poole, and Kathy Hill (Rob), all of McRae; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Mary Mathis of Jacksonville; sisters, Madgelene Conner (Duane) of Helena, and Madeline Strom of McRae; brother, Lonnie Sellars (Lucille) of McRae; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Orris Elmer (Bill) Mathis, son, Steve Mathis, brother, Ernest Sellars, Jr. and parents, Earnest Sellars and Nancy Powell Sellars.

Monteal's home was the heart of the family, a place where everyone would gather for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Sunday dinners. Her interests were a reflection of her love for her family and friends. She was renowned for her cooking, with her pecan pies, jellies and homemade biscuits being the highlights of every gathering. Her Meal Soup, a special concoction she lovingly prepared, was considered by many to be a cure-all, a testament to her nurturing spirit.

As we bid farewell to Monteal Sellars Mathis, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Monteal's gift of hospitality was unparalleled, and her home was always open to friends, family, and even strangers in need of a warm meal or a kind word. Her spirit, characterized by her generosity and kindness, will forever be a beacon of light in the community she so dearly loved.
