James "Jimmy" Burl
Powell, Jr.
Jun 4, 1947 — Apr 1, 2025
James "Jimmy" Burl Powell, Jr.
Wednesday, June 4, 1947 – Tuesday, April 1, 2025
It is with a blend of sorrow for our loss and joy for his peace that we announce that James Burl Powell, Jr., affectionately known as "Jimmy", died on Tuesday, April 1, at his residence in his beloved hometown of McRae, Georgia after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Shawn McEachin officiating. Interment will be held at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at the church prior to the service.
Jimmy was born on June 4, 1947 in McRae, Georgia. He was the son of the late JB Powell and Eula Green Powell. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Lunet Griffin Powell, and his sisters, Audrey Holden and Annette Guin.
He is survived by his son, Jamie Hussey (Vicki) of McRae, stepchildren, Jennifer Jones (Ed) of Fitzgerald, Charlotte Garland of Townsend, Tennessee, Christy Peacock (Victor) of Wray and Walter Morton (Regina) of Wray, sixteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his sister, Adell Hamilton of St. Marys.
As a lifelong resident of Telfair County, he was well known and liked by many. Jimmy served the community as an insurance agent for many years. In addition to his career in insurance, Jimmy took immense pride in his role as a bus driver. He was not just a driver but a friend to many of the students he transported daily. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, an active member of the Midway Men's Prayer Breakfast and later attended and found spiritual solace at Central Grove Church of God.
Jimmy's love for the outdoors was as vast as the Georgia skies. He was happiest when he was at the river, rod in hand, waiting for the next big catch.
As we prepare to bid farewell to Jimmy, the family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dennia Swain and Esther Suarez, whose assistance in the funeral service preparation has been invaluable.
We also wish to express our profound gratitude to the friends, neighbors, and the wider McRae community. Your outpouring of love during Jimmy's illness was a source of great comfort to him and a clear reflection of the impact he had on all of us. The kindness and care shown to Jimmy will forever be remembered and cherished.
