H. B. Barnes Jr.

Horace Benton (H. B.) Barnes, Jr., 96, of McRae, Georgia passed away on May 10, 2020 in the Dodge County Hospital.

He was born in Towns, Georgia on February 26, 1924 to H. B. and Emma Curtis Barnes. He was a graduate of ABAC and University of Georgia. He served in World War II as a Marine in the South Pacific and in the Occupation of Japan. Following graduation at the University of Georgia, he served as an instructor for the veterans farm training program in Telfair County. He was a lifetime farmer and raised registered Duroc hogs. He retired as an of office manager for the Georgia Department of Veterans Services. He was a long time member of Scotland United Methodist Church and currently a member of McRae United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of McRae Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years, Jean Smith Barnes, and a son, Steve Barnes. Survivors include his children Cookie (Ted) Palmer, Patty (Stan) Rutherford, Reid (Kitsy) Barnes, and his 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.
