Gary Edward Smith

October 25, 1951 – October 26, 2023

Gary Edward Smith, 72, of Chauncey, Georgia passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023 at his residence.

Gary was born in Atlanta, Georgia and was preceded in death by his parents Charles Franklin Smith and Ida Mae Jones Smith. He was a graduate of Walker High School in Atlanta and a graduate of Georgia Southern University, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduation he worked in the banking industry, most notably a Vice President of SouthTrust Bank. After retiring from the banking industry, he started his own mortgage company, Compass Financial Group, where he retired.

He is survived by his wife - Dr. Martha Smith of Chauncey; son – Austin Edward Smith of Atlanta; cousins – Diana (Pete) Burnett of Snellville, Barbara Dawson of Avondale Estates and Jordan (Kate) Dawson of Grant Park.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. in Providence Primitive Baptist Church located at 6761 McRae Hwy, McRae-Helena 31037. Officiating the service will be Elder Matt Yawn with interment to follow at Zion Hope Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 28, 2023 from 6-8P.M. at Lowes Funeral Home in McRae-Helena.
