Mr. Charles E. Hinson, age 88, of Wheeler County, died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 30, 2023 surrounded by family members.
Charles was a native of Wheeler County, 1953 graduate of Alamo High School, and served in the Georgia Army National Guard his senior year. After graduation, he joined the US Navy as an Aviation Electrician and served 1954-1957. He then attended South Georgia College and ABAC graduating from the University of Georgia in 1961 with a degree in Forestry.
He held many positions with the U.S. Forest Service and retired in 1988 with 32 years of service. He worked in 7 different states with the US Forest Service in various positions. His career began in Plumas National Forest, California and continued in Texas, Louisiana, Virginia, North Carolina, Mississippi, and finally Georgia where he retired as Region 8 Director of Dispersed Recreation, Wilderness, and Information Management.
He then moved back to his home in Wheeler County in 2016 to operate the family farm. He has been an active member of the Methodist Church in all states, serving in various leadership roles. He was also a member of the Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary Club. Charles was a devoted husband of 62 years, a loving father and Papa. He loved hunting, fishing, sports, working on his farm, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewart G and Ruth Timmerman Hinson of McRae, and his brother, James L Hinson of Middleburg, Florida.
His family includes his wife Myrna Bruner Hinson of Alamo, Georgia; son, James (Jim) E. Hinson of Mt Dora, Florida; daughter, Sherri L. Young of Savannah; three granddaughters, Brittany (Tyler) Booth of Cataula, Anna Ladner of Senoia, and Sara Mendoza of Rancho Cucamonga, California; 3 great granddaughters Payton, Isla, and Nora Booth along with a niece and several nephews; sister-in-law, Betty Hinson of Middleburg, Florida.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 12 Noon in McRae Methodist Church. Rev Jimbo Dominy will officiate with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at McRae Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the McRae Methodist Church.
